What is Identity Theft?

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing frauds in the UK. In 1999 there were only 20,000 recorded cases but by 2003 this had risen to 101,000.*

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information to use on his or her behalf, to open bank accounts, obtain payments or credit, or fraudulently obtain benefits or goods and services.   Worse still, they can gain access to your bank accounts and remove funds. The possibility of becoming a victim is unfortunately increasing and the results can be devastating.

Armed with a few personal details, identity fraudsters can open credit accounts and make purchases in your name, without your knowledge.   CIFAS identified and protected over 50,000 victims of identity theft in 2004, up from 43,000 victims in 2002.
