Crime reference number
Report all thefts to the police and get a crime reference number.

Cancel cards
Cancel all lost or stolen bank cards. Request new cards with new PIN numbers.

Check your credit report
Check your credit report and identify any unrecognised accounts, amendments or activity.

If you find any information that you do not recognise, contact the credit providers reporting the information immediately.

Unrecognised transactions
If you identify unrecognised transactions on your statement or bills contact the issuer or service provider immediately.

Protective registration
A further step is to place a "Protective Registration" against your address. This can be done through CIFAS (the UK's fraud prevention agency).

A protective registration places a marker against your address that will alert credit providers to go through additional security checks before issuing credit to a person at your address.
