How do identity thieves work?

Fraudsters can use your personal information in a variety of ways. To be most effective, they need as much information about you as possible. Even the most basic of personal information can be helpful to a fraudster.

What have you thrown away today?
Fraudsters sort through your rubbish for personal information that has been discarded. Statements, bills and official forms all contain information of potential value.

Burglary or theft of your wallet purse or bag
Burglars, muggers and car thieves are interested in your personal papers and documents as well as your TV or stereo. They can be sold on or used to impersonate you.

Spoof internet sites and email "scamming"
Fraudsters pose as companies or government agencies requesting confidential information from you or use bogus internet sites to encourage you to enter your details directly.

Do you live in a flat with a shared hall?
There is a real risk that post arriving in a shared hall could be intercepted or stolen.
Post can also be fraudulently re-directed to another address so the fraudster receives your own important documents.

Are you moving house?
If you have moved house and not redirected your mail, it could easily be stolen and misused.

Fraudulently obtaining your credit report
By posing as a landlord or employer or any person who may have a legitimate or legal right to the information.

Shoulder surfing
This means someone looking over your shoulder when filling out an application form, listening as you give your details over the phone or picking up discarded credit or debit card receipts.
